Christians, Jews, and Muslims: History, Heritage, and the Struggles of Three Cultures in Valencia.

Valencia is often remembered for the coexistence of three great cultures—Muslim, Jewish, and Christian. This rich intercultural past shaped the city’s architecture, neighborhoods, and traditions. But was it truly peaceful? Far from it!

When King James I entered Balansiya, Muslim symbols were torn down, and mosques were replaced by Gothic parishes—even the cathedral itself stands on former Islamic ground. The Carmen quarter became a ghetto, where Arabs lived under constant surveillance.
