About The Event

The historical period after the Muslims controlled Valencia was a difficult time for Valencia but a great one in terms of art. The Spanish Baroque of the first decades gave vent to the Italian influence, visible in Valencian architectural works such as Saint Martin, Santos Juanes, and, more clearly, in Valencia’s

Cathedral. Who were the "Novatori"? What were dramatic arts like in Valencia during this century? And how did the economy of the reign fare after over 40% of the population was expelled? Our English- speaking guide David from Ars Magna will answer these questions and more as we enjoy a morning walking through Valencia’s old town.

The Baroque tour will last 1.30 hours.  We will meet at 10:20 in front of the Palace of the Marqués de Dos Aguas - Marquis of Two Waters - façade. The tour begins at 10:30. I'll give a detailed explanation of this fabulous rococo work of art.  Then, we will walk to the Rococo parish of Saint John of the Cross, where one of the members of the religious congregation will be waiting to ease our access. I will explain the history of this magnificent parish, the best example of the late Baroque in VLC. IWCV will donate 2€ per participant to thank the Carmelite order for their kindness.  From there, we will walk to Saint Martin on Calle San Vicente, another great example of Baroque in VLC. It is usually open in the mornings, but I should not explain inside as there are no guided tours to this parish, and there are usually faithful people praying. I will explain it outside, and we can enter it in silence to have a look.  While walking across Queen Square, we will have a quick look at Saint Catherine of Alexandria's bell tower (Santa Catalina).  From there we can go to see the façade of Saint Thomas and Saint Philip Neri. One of the best examples of Roman Baroque influence in town. In case it is open we can give a quick look.  We will then see the elegant façade of the Cathedral, one of the most fascinating examples of Italian Baroque.  We Will finish by the Basílica of the Virgin, enjoying its superb lines and the frescoes by the renowned painter Palomino.  MEETING POINT: MARQUIS OF TWO WATERS PALACE 10.20 H  LAST STOP: BASILICA OF THE VIRGIN ON VIRGIN SQUARE 12 H
