An important event with political ramifications are about to occur that may impact United Kingdom and USA IWCV members – residency requirements and impending election, respectively.
Spanish residency procedures for UK citizens changed on 6 July 2020.
Brexit will be implemented as of 1 January 2021, and UK citizens who live in Spain more than three months a year will be required to apply for residency. Having a NIE (Numero de Identification Extranjero) is not sufficient. Those UK citizens who already hold Spanish residency may wish to switch to the new TIC (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjeros) residency cards which they may do so electronically. There are benefits for switching. Having an abrogado is not necessary but may be helpful in sorting out procedures and advising on financial liabilities (if any).
