IWCV Notice

Two important events with political ramifications are about to occur that may impact United Kingdom and USA IWCV members – residency requirements and impending election, respectively.

  1. Spanish residency procedures for UK citizens changed on 6 July 2020.

Brexit will be implemented as of 1 January 2021, and UK citizens who live in Spain more than three months a year will be required to apply for residency. Having a NIE (Numero de Identification Extranjero) is not sufficient.  Those UK citizens who already hold Spanish residency may wish to switch to the new TIC (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjeros) residency cards which they may do so electronically. There are benefits for switching.  Having an abrogado is not necessary but may be helpful in sorting out procedures and advising on financial liabilities (if any).

         (2) American citizens living in Spain are eligible to vote in US elections.

UPDATE:  Ballots will be distributed on/about 19 September.

You may drop off ballots at the Valencia Consular Agency, Carrer del Dr. Romagosa 1.  The Consulate will forward your ballots via diplomatic pouch free of charge to the U.S. where they will be forwarded to each state.   Hours: Mon-Fri, 10:00 -- 14:00

Appointments to drop off voted ballots are not mandatory, but are recommended, since only one group of customers at a time can be admitted into the waiting room (social distancing).

To make an appointment, call +34 96 351 6973, Mon-Fri between 09:30 13:30

Each state determines how voters must apply for and submit ballots – whether electronically or by mail or a combination of both. With postal service severely taxed due to Covid-19 in both USA and Spain, all American citizens should quickly request Voter Registration forms from their states.  Election for 2020 will be held on Tuesday, 3 November.
