Summer has arrived! The parks and beaches are filling up, the tourists are returning, and the outdoors beckons! The IWCV usually takes a break during the summer, but this year we will continue straight through to give all of you the opportunity to meet up with each other after what we will surely all remember as one of the most bizarre years each of us has ever had.
The New Member Coffee in May proved to be a great success. It gave our new members a chance to connect with longer term members as well as other new members. It was an opportunity to get useful information, share concerns, and get answers to some of their questions about the group and living in Valencia. We will be sure to schedule a New Member Coffee every couple of months.
Our first membership event after too many months of Covid restrictions was a resounding success! Many thanks to Susan Kaplan, who arranged Fish Tour of the Mercado Central and cooking class with Chef Jordi Morera of Ca Morera. Each of the 5 dishes he prepared were delicious. He made the preparation look so easy that most of us felt like we could manage to produce his recipes. Susan is hopeful that we can convince him to do it again so that more of our members have the opportunity to experience Jordi’s culinary skills in such a personal setting. Sandra Molyneau did a great job of writing down the recipes which she has shared with participants. Lauren Baker took some great pictures of the event. You can see them on the IWC-Valencia page on Facebook at International Women's Club Valencia | Facebook
First Tuesday Coffee – It does not happen very often, but this month the First Tuesday was the 1st of the month, and our coffee happened before our newsletter came out! Despite a little rain, we had a lovely time chatting at MuviMent, behind the MUVIM Museum. All women in Valencia, both members and those who haven’t joined yet, are welcome to join us for our next First Tuesday Coffee on Thursday 1 July. Details will be posted before then on our website at Events & Activities | IWC - Valencia (iwc-valencia.com)
June Luncheon – 2 PM on Thursday 17 June at La Pizca de Sal’s beautiful terrace behind the Torres de Quart, but you are welcome to arrive a little early for a drink and to catch up with friends. Two new stories will be added to “Our Stories” on the IWCV website. Take a look at Our Stories | IWC - Valencia
Take a look at some of your new recipes posted at IWC Valencia Recipes | IWC - Valencia …yum! And now that summer is here, Chef Amanda thought it would be a great idea to share our favorite grilling and barbecue recipes so we will be ready for those fun outdoor meals! Please submit your June recipes to Chef Amanda at email@example.com. Please, only one submission per person, in Word format attached to your email. If you have a photo of your dish, please attach that to your email too.
Thank you to everyone who purchased Peter Somogyi's book. We raised €36 for our Charity fund. This 36€ will be donated to Casa Ronald Valencia. As you may have seen on our Facebook page, Casa Ronald are looking for sponsorship for "The Giraffe Room" It is the largest room in the house and costs a staggering €10,000 per year to maintain. Casa Ronald greatly appreciate the ongoing support from IWC.
Proyector Vivir are continually looking for volunteers. Watch out for further information, hopefully in June.
For those culinary lovers please note as from June 1st we will be selling Chef Amanda Cushman's Cookery Book 'Simple, Real Food'. Amanda's book will sell at €20 and she is generously donating 5€ per book sale to our charity fund. Please contact Pauline to reserve a copy on firstname.lastname@example.org. We will have some copies for sale at the June luncheon. For a preview of the book, take a look at Simple, Real Food: Delicious clean food prepared simply. By Amanda Cushman (amandacooks.com).
Thanks to Phyllis So who set up a test run of a murder mystery in Valencia. Two IWCV teams joined others from the city and beyond to try their hand at being detectives. According to team captain Jackie Trowbridge, it seems that 29 May was a murderess day – Jack the Ripper was wreaking havoc in the streets of Valencia. The citizens were well protected with the Super Sleuths detectives team of Karen, Belinda, Sonata, Ines and Jackie cracking the case: the nurse did it with a scalpel! Neither IWCV team won, but everyone had a lot of fun tracking down the clues and deducing who did it!
Beginning this Thursday 3 June, we can all try "longecôte", a new activity that is not only fun to do, it's also a great way to get some really good exercise in the sun! We will meet at 11:00am at the Malvarosa beach, behind the Malvarosa hospital (the 32 bus stops right there). From there, we will walk in the water up to our hips (or as high as you'd like). Partners/spouses are very welcome to join in the fun! We will avoid waves, but you should know how to swim to participate in this activity. After the longecôte, we can have lunch if you're interested. Please wear a bathing suit (or a wetsuit if you have one) and sunscreen, and bring a towel and a change of clothes or a cover-up for afterwards. Yesterday the sea temperature was 19C (66F); next week it should be 20-21C (68-69F). Please do not bring valuables with you as they will be left unattended. If you plan to join, please WhatsApp Claudine Escaith Trang at +33 6 68 29 38 10 and let her know. Claudine can also answer any questions you may have.
And don’t forget our weekly on-going activities – Monday mahjong (contact: Jane Buck, email@example.com, to join the next class and learn how to play) and Women Who Walk on Fridays (contact Ida Mauritzen, firstname.lastname@example.org; or Claudine Escaith Trang, WhasApp +33 6 68 29 38 10).
