Monthly Newsletter
December 2021

The holiday season is always lovely in Valencia, with crisp, cool air in the mornings and evenings, sunshine during the day, and lots of things for IWCV members to do!

MEMBERSHIP EVENTS FOR DECEMBER

  • First Tuesday Coffee – Tuesday 7 December, 10:30 to Noon at MuviMent, outside behind the Muvim Museum (yes, they have heaters!). This event is for all women in Valencia, both members and those who haven’t officially joined us yet. We’re looking forward to seeing you there!

  • Holiday Treats Exchange – Friday 10 December, for IWCV members. Stock up on goodies and have a complementary glass of wine or cava while wishing your fellow IWCV members a happy holiday season and a healthy 2022! For complete details and to register, click here: Holiday Treat Exchange for IWCV Members

  • OWL – Because the last Wednesday of December falls between Christmas and New Year’s Day, we will not have our regular “OWL” Happy Hour this month, but we look forward to seeing you all at the next one on Wednesday 26 January.

  • IWCV Recipe Project: Take a look at the “One Pot Autumn Meals” recipes submitted by members last month, plus Chef Amanda’s monthly cooking tip, at IWC Valencia Recipes | IWC - Valencia.  Submit your recipes for our very appropriate December theme “Favorite Christmas Dishes”. Please attach your recipe to an email and send it to Chef Amanda at amandascooking@gmail.com. If you have a photo of your finished dish, please attach that too!

 FUNDRAISING

Amanda Cushman – Simple Real Food

IWCV member Chef Amanda Cushman of Simple Real Food Inc. is a culinary educator, cookbook author, writer and recipe developer who has cooked professionally for over thirty years. She teaches privately for groups of two to twenty students in private homes. She lived and worked in food in Manhattan for twenty years, working with Martha Stewart and Glorious Foods before entering the world of recipe development.

Amanda and her husband, Herman relocated to Valencia in September 2001 and she has transitioned into offering online cooking classes as well as preparing meals to go for the ex-pat community. For Amanda, Spain is a perfect place to explore all things food, with its vibrant cuisine, abundant food markets and access to fresh produce, fish and meat. Private classes are available upon request at  www.chapelhillcookingclasses.com

Amanda is selling her cookbook 'Simple Real Food' which features her favourite recipes and you can also learn different cooking techniques to improve your cooking. The cookbook would make an ideal Christmas gift. To order your copy, please email Pauline at pauline.fitzgerald9@gmail.com. The book is selling for €20 but Amanda will kindly donate €5 for each book sold to our charities.

IWCV Christmas Cards
Don't miss an opportunity to purchase our Christmas Cards at all December IWCV events. The card was designed by our IWCV member Susan Hoover. Cards are on sale for €10 for a pack of 10. 100% of the proceeds will be divided between our three charities, Casa Ronald, Casa Caridad & Proyecto Vivir

Sponsor A Child

Thanks to all of you who have offered to 'Sponsor a Child’ for Three Kings on January 6th. Information & guidelines will be issued this week along with child allocation. This is quite a big project undertaken by Amigos de la Calle and they welcome the kindness and support of the IWCV ladies. There are approximately 250 children who are in need, it is wonderful that we can bring a little magic into the lives of these children.

ACTIVITIES

Despite a chilling, windy morning we had a good turnout for Susan Hoover's fascinating talk on Olive Oils. It was informative and helped us all understand olive oils better. There were samples of good and bad olive oils – Who knew? There was even talk of an olive oil tour and we will be investigating that possibility in the near future.

Our wine tour to the Murviedro winery in Requena proved to be very successful and was enjoyed by everyone. Our members especially enjoyed the lunch with unlimited wine! Thank you to Patricia Murray for all your hard work putting together our first wine tour. We're getting the kinks out and and hope to have more. We can also use some help putting tours together so if anyone is interested, please let Phyllis know (vpactivities.iwcvalencia@gmail.com).

We have lots to look at for the next year as we start planning. Any ideas for outings and events to attend, please keep us posted! In the meantime, please check our "Join Us for Local Events" WhatsApp chat group for things to do. We also have our "IWC-V Social Chat" for everything else that might be be interesting: restaurants, photos of trips, information needed etc.

With the onset of cold weather, the Women Who Walk continue to walk on the Turia; however, if it's too cold or rainy an alternative is to meet at Saler Mall (a/k/a El Saler) for a walk around the mall and a stop for coffee.  El Saler is easily accessible by bus or taxi.

Sadly, it is getting too cold to sit outside at Marcellinos and play mahjong on Mondays, so our Monday Mahjong games will be on hiatus for December & January. Any players who wish to form their own indoor groups to play are welcome to borrow tiles from Jane. And, we only need one more person to sign up to learn to play and we will have enough to hold a class in January. If you are interested in learning this fun game, please contact Jane at forjbuck@aol.com.
